Muse, dots, Grok, Google: which AI agents actually call and book local businesses

Everyone is talking about AI agents. Only some of them ever reach a local business, and they do it in two different ways. Here is the scorecard, and what to do about it.

Which AI agents can call or book a business right now?

Muse and Google call businesses. Google AI Mode and ChatGPT book restaurants through reservation platforms. Dots and the consumer Grok app do neither. Here's who does what, and since when.

Two pipes run through that table. Some agents book through platforms, like OpenTable or Yelp, using partnerships behind the scenes. Others pick up the phone and call you like a person would. A local business needs to be ready for both.

What does Meta's Muse actually do with businesses?

Muse calls businesses on a user's behalf. It books tables and appointments, checks whether something is in stock, and sorts out service questions. It calls outward only. It doesn't answer your phone, and when a call goes unanswered it moves to the next business instead of leaving a voicemail.

Meta launched Muse in the US on September 8 and started rolling out calling the following week. On September 23 it announced every Muse agent will get its own email address, and on September 29 it launched Muse for Small Business, which helps with back-office work but still doesn't pick up your line. CNN reported Muse passed 2 million downloads in its first weeks. We covered the details in AI agents have started calling your business and the safety questions in is Muse safe for your business.

Is Google's AI calling businesses too?

Yes, and it got there first. Google's AI started calling businesses for searchers in January 2025, beginning with nail salons and auto repair shops, to check prices and availability. On May 19, 2026, Google expanded that calling to home repair, beauty and pet care across most US states.

Separately, Google's AI Mode books restaurant tables. A diner gives party size, time, area and cuisine, and Google finds real open slots across its booking partners and links straight to the reservation. It started for US Ultra subscribers in August 2025 and opened to everyone in the UK and Canada in April 2026. Restaurant owners, we wrote a full guide for you: AI is booking restaurant tables now. Can it find yours?

Does ChatGPT book or call businesses?

It books, but it doesn't call. Since August 10, 2026, ChatGPT can book a restaurant table or join a waitlist right in the chat through Yelp, Resy and OpenTable, in the US and Canada. Changes and cancellations still happen on those platforms. OpenAI hasn't announced ChatGPT phoning businesses for its users.

Will OpenAI's dots call my business?

Not based on what OpenAI launched. Dots, announced September 29, 2026, are always-on agents that work for you inside ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. You can talk to your dot by voice, but that's a call between you and your agent. Pre-launch reports said each dot would get its own phone number. The launch didn't include one. More in OpenAI's dots are here.

Is the Grok bot calling businesses?

No. The consumer Grok app is a chat assistant with voice mode and connections to your email, files and calendar, but it doesn't place calls or book for you. Grok matters to local businesses for a different reason: on July 1, 2026, xAI opened a beta Grok Voice Agent Builder that businesses can use to build their own AI phone agent, priced at about $0.05 a minute plus $0.01 a minute for the phone line.

So Grok shows up on the answering side, the same side as our own Orion, Vapi, ElevenLabs and others. A builder like that gives you the parts. You still have to write the prompt, connect the number, handle forwarding, and make sure the summaries actually reach you.

What's the difference between agents that call and agents that book?

Booking agents work through platforms that have partnered with them, so a business has to be listed on those platforms to be booked. Calling agents use your public phone number, so a business has to answer. Agents in both camps first read your website and Google Business Profile to decide whether you're worth contacting.

That last part is the one every business controls. An agent picks who to call or book from what it can read: services, area, hours, prices and reviews. If it can't find those, you don't make the shortlist, and you'll never know a customer was looking.

What should a local business do about all of this?

Four things cover every agent on the list. Be on the booking platforms that fit your business. Make your website readable without guesswork. Answer every call, including the ones that come in while you're on a job or slammed at dinner. And treat agent calls like real customers, because there's a real customer behind each one.
